[Shadeshi_Bondhu] Intel Drops More Prices In Switch To 45-Nm Chips

Intel has dropped the prices of more 65-nanometer processors within
its more mainstream product lines, as the chipmaker ramps up the move
to its newer 45-nm chips.

The latest price cuts were in the Core 2 duo- and quad-core desktop
categories. Pricing for the quad-core Q6700 was slashed in half to
$266 from $530, and pricing for the Q6600 dropped 16% to $224 from
$266. In the dual-core category, pricing for the E6850 fell 31% to
$183 from $266.

The current pricing now has the 65-nm Q6600 at the same price as the
45-nm Q9300. Even with the price cut, the E6850 is still more
expensive than a 45-nm dual-core E8190.

For quite a while, customers have been able to buy 45-nm processors
for the price of 65-nm chips within Intel's Extreme line of quad-core
desktop processors aimed at workstations and serious PC gamers. For
example, customers can buy a 45-nm Core 2 Extreme QX9650 for the same
price as the 65-nm QX6850. Both sell for $999.

The same trend in more mainstream desktop processors has been going
on over the last couple of months, Intel spokesman George Alfs said.
The reason for the price cuts is to move customers over to the new 45-
nm line as Intel adds more new products. With prices for the new line
matching those of the older chips, "it's an easy choice," Alfs
said. "(Customers) can go right to 45-nm."

Intel has been shipping 45-nm processors since November. The
manufacturing process used to build the chips shrinks the transistors
to 45-nm, which means more transistors per core for a greater power-
to-performance ratio than 65-nm processors.

Intel expects to be selling more 45-nm processors overall than 65-nm
chips starting in the third quarter. The company has already reached
that crossover point with its Xeon server processors, Alfs said.

The price cuts put more pressure on rival Advanced Micro Devices,
which isn't scheduled to start shipping 45-nm processors in volume
until the second half of the year. In the meantime, AMD has taken a
hit in sales.

The chipmaker this month reported a loss of $538 million for the
first quarter due to lower-than-expected sales of $1.5 billion. It
was the sixth consecutive quarterly loss. AMD executives, however,
maintain that the company will break even in the fourth quarter.
