[Shadeshi_Bondhu] Talk on "Science & Politics of Genetic Engineering".

Living Farms,

1181/2146, Ratnakar Bag – 2,

Tankapani Road

Bhubaneswar – 751018

DT: 26.08.08

PRESS RELEASE

Talk by Dr Michael Hansen, Senior Staff Scientist, Consumers Union, USA on "The Science and Politics of Genetic Engineering", at IMAGE, Aug 23rd 2008.

Bhubaneswar: Dr Michael Hansen Senior Scientist Consumers Union, USA, delivered a talk on "The Science and Politics of Genetic Engineering" at IMAGE Conference Hall on the 23rd of August. Hosted by Living Farms, Bhubaneswar, this discussion session was attended by GVV Sharma, Revenue Secretary, Prof Radhamohan, former State Information Commissioner, Director Biotechnology, Government of Orissa, Vice Chancellor OUAT, Director OUAT and other eminent scientists from OUAT, CRRI, CTCRI, CIFA, doctors from Institute of Life Sciences, Regional Medical Research Centre, Government Ayurvedic Hospital, Jana Swasthya Abhiyan, Professors from the Utkal University, eminent social workers, media persons and activists. The session was chaired by Dr Dhanada Mishra, Chairman, Human Development Foundation.

Dr Michael Hansen in his talk pointed out the imprecise nature of Genetic Engineering. There is no way to ensure the intended effect and the process is highly unpredictable, he said. He cited various scientific studies to point out the adverse effects this technology was having on agriculture as well as health of farmers and consumers world wide. He busted the myth of high yield and low pesticide use being associated with the Genetically Modified (GM) crops by showing statistics that showed such effects were temporary and GM crops fared much worse than their traditional counterparts in the long run.

He also criticized the proponents of GM crops for trying to project GM crops as the solution to the food crisis that loomed ahead. GM technology was yet to fathom all the conditions behind increased yield and therefore such statements were mischievous he stated.  The companies advocating GM crops were the ones that once said DDT was safe for humans. Thus it will be fallacious to assume that these industries are doling out correct information.

The solution to the present crisis is not a new and untested technology but exploring other safe and sure methods that exist but are ignored because they cannot be exploited for profit by the industry. He exposed the industry science nexus by quoting from correspondence between the companies advocating GM crops and the scientists and institutions that supported their views.

The effect of GM foods on the health of consumers has never been seriously studied, he said. He cited medical studies which pointed out that the foreign proteins created by the inserted Bt gene over stimulate the immune system and cause allergenicity. Studies on rats and mice have revealed serious health disorders that have never been seriously followed up. In India cultivation of Bt Cotton, a genetically modified crop has been allowed in a few States. This is not a food crop and yet those handling it have come down with severe allergies. The crop by products eaten by cattle and other animals has affected them severely. What would happen when genetically modified food crops are introduced is a question all Indians should seriously ponder upon, he suggested.

Genetic Engineering is reductionist in approach that fails to study the local ecology and evolve holistic solutions, Dr Hansen revealed.

Dr D P Ray, Vice Chancellor, OUAT, said that his institution was indeed concentrating upon alternating methods than jumping into the GM bandwagon. He said industry sponsored studies should not be taken at their face value. Higher yields can be possible by ensuring the fertility of the soil, choosing appropriate crops, lessening chemical inputs and using such methods as Marker Assisted Selection (MAS) that did not require the physical insertion of foreign genes. Orissa is a State with a rich biodiversity. It would not be wise to let Genetically Modified crops contaminate this, he emphasised.

The Dean, Agriculture, OUAT, was of the opinion that GM technology was a risk that should be best avoided. The first generation crops were already proving to have serious adverse effects. When the second and third generation crops would be introduced the effect would be disastrous, he said.

Prof Radhamohan was of the opinion that Genetically Modified crops should be rejected per se, a view that found favour with a large section of the audience who were shocked at the revelations. They agreed with Dr Michael Hansen that agriculture and food production is too important to be left to profit seeking industries. "We need to have a knowledge based approach and not brute force that seeks to change nature with an untested and imprecise technology that was already showing its seamy side."

The meeting ended with a vote of thanks and an appeal to the policy makers to review their stand on Genetically Modified crops. The need of the hour was ecology friendly sustainable agriculture that produced safe and nourishing food using nature as a friend and not going against its rules that have been shaped by centuries of careful adaptation, opined Dr Dhanada Mishra who chaired the session.

"It is now 30 years since I have been confining myself to the treatment ofchronic diseases. During those 30 years I have run against so many histories of littlechildren who had never seen a sick day until they were vaccinated and who, in the severalyears that have followed, have never seen a well day since. I couldn't put my finger onthe disease they have. They just weren't strong. Their resistance was gone. They wereperfectly well before they were vaccinated. They have never been well since. [Shadeshi_Bondhu] Muslim sprinter wins Olympic sprint dressed head to toe in hijab

Sprinters have long been squeezing their muscular frames into the most eye-wateringly skimpy, tight and revealing costumes imaginable.

But one female athlete at this year's Olympics is bucking the trend for bulging lycra and naked torsos.

In 2004, Bahrain's Ruqaya Al Ghasara, a devout Muslim, was the first athlete to ever take part in an Olympics wearing a hijab.

 Roqaya Al-Gassra

Today, Al Ghasara won her heat of the women's 200m sprint at the Bird's Nest stadium - despite being clothed head to foot.

Al Ghasara finished first followed by France's Muriel Hurtis-Houairi and Sri Lanka's Susanthika Jayasinghe.

Admittedly, Al Ghasara 's hijab is a rather sportier version of the traditional dress.

Clinging to her body as she powers down the track the hijab completely covers her head, arms and legs.

Known as a Hijood - or hijab combined with a sports hood - the costume was specially designed for Al Ghasara by an Australian sports clothing company.

It allows Muslim athletes to compete while still adhering to the strict modesty required of their faith.

Al Ghasara, who was the Bahrain flag-bearer at last week's opening ceremony, jas said the Hijood has improved her performance.

'It's great to finally have a high performance outfit that allows me to combine my need for modesty with a design made from breathable, moisture-controlled fabric," she said.

'It's definitely helped me to improve my times being able to wear something so comfortable and I'm sure it will help me to give my best performance at Beijing.

'I hope that my wearing the hijood sports top will inspire other women to see that modesty or religious beliefs don't have to be a barrier to participating in competitive sports.'

In 2004 Al Ghasara defied objections from fundamentalists in her village to take part in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, running in the 100 metres.

And in 2006 she won the women's 200m final at the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, making her the first Bahraini-born athlete to win a major international athletics gold medal.

[Shadeshi_Bondhu] Dealing with online insecurity

Beware of cyber criminals! These nefarious people may live beside you, event at your office and home. Cyber crime is one of buzzwords after the rise of web based applications. Experts warned long before cyber criminals will be united at the net to conduct their info-tech sabotages. Special IT knowledge may inspire them to invade computers of others and valuable information will be destroyed or licked out by such programmers who acquired mastery over programming.

However, without special IT knowledge a simple computer user can be a worst ever cyber criminal. S/he can delete you from the cyberspace and make your status vulnerable to the surfers. Just few weeks ago one of my junior friends who spends much of his time at facebook, he found someone of his office changed his facebook profile when he went to canteen without logging out his facebook account. Vulgar words were posted at his profile that was read by his over three hundred friends. He checked the records of office server and identified the colleague who changed the profile.

Hacking is a pleasure for some people like eavesdropping talks, peeping through the windows of others, seeing secretly purses of women, voyeurism etc. They are not considered as criminals involved in serious crime, unconsciously they are victims of own malicious instincts and just for pleasure and inquisitiveness they invade passwords and security of others.

Today it became so difficult to go out of room without signing off our e-mail addresses, facebook, blogs etc, even computers cannot be opened to all because your own people can be a threat to your digital life. It does not a matter whether you are belong to an advanced society or under privilege society and it does not a headache if you live in the western world or not. Every body can be a hacker or cyber criminal at any moment.

To crack down on hackers you will get many software available at the CD shops. Programmers are busy for designing internet and PC security software. Security breaking is their subject of study and they build protective cyber shield as if crackers cannot invade the digital life. However, you are not free from hackers or cyber criminals who are closely associated with you. Breaking of the PC security is going on at every moment alarmingly.

Hacking is a crime and hackers are supposed to be punished like bank robbers in the developed countries. But connotation of hacking is not purely negative. People are using the word 'hacker' mistakenly; even computer experts are using it differently. An illegal intruder in one's computer security system should be called cracker.

Most browsers of the intimated digital world do not understand so far how the PC users are helpless in front of computers. In fact, consciousness of the issue is out of their knowledge. Social networking sites are the rendezvous for hackers where a simple account holder can be a worst hacker if s/he has a clever mind. With malicious knowledge they manipulate children, women and simple computer users to get passwords. Many psychological tricks are popping up from their minds to invade the privacy. Technology often is ruled by subjects of non-science.

IT security experts sometimes called 'white hat hackers' who are appointed to maintain security of PCs. The trained hackers will be high paid staffs of companies and banks. Still computer security firms are not efficient at tracing out 'black hat hackers' and often they fail to crack down on them. So if you need to fight against super intelligent crackers, you have to assign 'white hat hackers' who are hacking geniuses.

Hacking cannot be only prevented by developing security systems and software, rather to make you feel free with your computer we should address cyber ethical issues. People should practice and learn entering systems of others is indecent and crimes. Why don't people think without permission touching someone's computer is indecent act? No hesitation works in some people minds to open and use friends and colleagues' computers. Generally they are not aware of the privacy issues and often think breaking privacy is one of the funs.

A lot of surfers do not think they are safe in the cyber world. Security concern and cyber fears force them to open pseudo e-mail addresses for chat and even they open accounts of social networking sites with hiding identity. They think disclosing themselves with posting photos and files may be a reason for their harassment. So it is good to be netizens in a hidden identity.

Many of surfers think their postings, blogs, personal website etc are being traced by hackers, law enforcing agencies, enemies etc. So avid cyber citizens are very concern on security and privacy issues. Usually they do not want commercial web sites using their browsing habits to spread their marketing strategies, they like to post an opinion to an online forum without worrying that it could be traced by web based marketing people. Besides hassles from online marketing people scammers are active and they are developing tricks to deceive the surfers.

Surfers are glued to bogs, social networking sites, checking and replaying e-mails. But security threats from either professional hackers or amateur cyber criminals can destroy their joy of surfing. This issue should be solved by ethical practices in operating computers. Now from early age kids are going into cyberspace and learning programming. So that age is suitable for adjusting with ethical matters regarding computer intruding and security issues. Computer etiquette and decency should be taught before using a computer.

Caption- Social networking sites like Facebook are places for some hackers.
