After nine days of disruption, Submarine Cable SEA-ME-WE4 that was
severed onthe Egyptian coast was restored yesterday, completely
restoring the country's heart-line of international telecom and
Internet communications.

According to Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB), the
cable was fully restored at 6 am yesterday -- enabling all types of
data transfer.

Since the cable snapped on January 3 -- digital data transmission
with the westward countries via Italy and France has been disrupted.
However digital communication with Singapore and Malaysia was fully
operational.

As bulk of the data transmission from the country relies on
connectivity with Italy and France, BTTB was providing an alternative
satellite support for telecom services while the Internet Service
Providers were giving backup services using VSATs.

As a result, data communication was very slow.

The submarine cable connects Bangladesh to the information
superhighway through four points -- two in Italy and France and two
in Singapore and Malaysia.

Fiber-Optic Link Around the Globe (FLAG), a fibre optic cable
maintenance company, was working on restoring the SEA-ME-WE4 line and
another line in Persian Gulfboth of which were severed within two
days of each other. FLAG, in a statement posted on the company
website, said it has surveyed the cut cable off Egypt with remotely
operated robots.

A FLAG spokesman told AP that it was laying a new cable underwater
between Egypt and France that would be "fully resilient" against cuts
such as last week's and also provide diversity in routes.

The cuts slowed businesses, hampered personal Internet usage and
caused a flurry of Internet blogger speculation, including rumours of
sabotage.

Government authorities and FLAG have refused to comment on the
speculation.

Installed by a consortium of 16 countries including Bangladesh, the
submarine cable was launched in 2006. Bangladesh paid US$ 35.1
million for its part of the cost. Since the installation of this line
there have been more than two dozen rounds of disruption -- but all
of them happened because of problems with the on-land fibre optic
line.

Each disruption deprives the BTTB of revenue of US$ 70,000 per hour.

Sources said that the SMW-4 cable has a total capacity to handle 120
Gb bandwidth, of this Bangladesh is currently subscribing 14 Gb.

BTTB has already cashed in revenue of over Tk 200 crore through
rental of this bandwidth.
