An undemocratic law proposed here may be necessary to strengthen democracy
The usual neglect of the fact that most of the population of is uneducated is a problem for democratic system.
Here is the proposed law - the sons, daughters, wife or husband of any elected official can not contest for seat for any elected office. This prohibition would prevail until the national literacy rate crosses 90% mark. In other words, unless and until the literacy rate of our country reaches at least 90% rate and maintains that rate (at the minimum), no first family members of any elected official will be allowed to contest in any kind of elections.
This proposed law should become effective from the next election. Since the literacy rate currently is below 90%, it will automatically ban all the first family members of all the MPs, Chairmans, Presidents, Members, etc to compete in election. Also, the members themselves should be prohibited to contest after second time, until the literacy rate is 90%.
The underlying assumption behind this proposed law is that illiteracy makes the electorate more susceptible to wrong choice while voting for a office. And most of the time, this mistake is demonstrated by the choice of family member of a previous or sitting official. This would also work as an inspiration for the responsible elected officials to work hard to achieve certain goals, it is expected.
There would be certain criticism of this proposed law w.r.t. human rights issues. Clearly, this law if made, will infringe on the human rights of certain portion of selected population. Many of those cases might be unwanted and unfair.
To those, we want to point out to think of this issue from a different perspective. Isn't right to education a basic human right? If so, how many people are denied of that human rights? Many of them even do not know or understand this very issue, isn't it? So, if you think the proposed law might work as an incentive to remove this widespread human rights violation that is caused by illiteracy, we hope that you will be willing to live with this undemocratic law for sometime.

This is the kind of article for which we started this column. Because of ongoing mess, a gift from our older generation, we often get diverted. Now that it seems some sanity is returning in Bangladesh, we would try to go back to our original plan.
